The Phelps Hornets will challenge the Mountain Mission Challengers at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Phelps comes in on six and Mountain Mission on three.
On Saturday, Phelps made easy work of Cordia and carried off a 15-2 victory. Considering the Hornets have won nine matchups by more than nine runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.
Mountain Mission let Jenkins stack four runs on them in the third inning on Thursday but luckily Mountain Mission prevailed anyway. The Challengers sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with an 8-7 win over the Cavaliers. That's two games straight that the Challengers have won by just one run.
Elawi Dawit made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits (and only one walk). He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run. That triple marked the first that he has hit this season.
In other batting news, Ezekiel Peters and Alex Nyakemori did most of the damage at the plate: Peters went 3-for-5 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run, while Nyakemori got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Nyakemori is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last five games he's played. Yonatan Wolde was another key player, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Mountain Mission kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive games.
Phelps' victory bumped their record up to 15-10. As for Mountain Mission, their win bumped their record up to 5-2.
Phelps skirted past Mountain Mission 8-7 when the teams last played back in April. Do the Hornets have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Challengers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
