Argo hasn't had much luck against Oak Lawn recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Argonauts will look to defend their home field against the Spartans at 4:30 p.m. Argo is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.3 runs per game this season.
Argo was handed a heart-breaking two-run defeat in their last contest, but they sure didn't let that happen against Thornton Fractional North on Thursday. The Argonauts were the clear victors by a 13-1 margin over the Meteors. The Argonauts haven't had any issues with the Meteors recently, as the game was their third consecutive victory against them.
Matt Mateyack was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out six batters over three innings while giving up just one earned run but no hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up a single hit in four consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing five bases while going 3-for-3. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 1.1 stolen bases per game.
In other batting news, Julio Ruiz-Bravo was a standout: he scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-3. He also hit a triple, marking his first of the season. Dennis Gaytan was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, Oak Lawn was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss. They came up short against Nazareth Academy, falling 13-7.
Oak Lawn saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Justin Canvin, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3.
Oak Lawn's defeat dropped their record down to 4-9. As for Argo, their win was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 3-7.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Argo has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Oak Lawn struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Argo suffered a grim 13-3 defeat to Oak Lawn in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Argonauts avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
