Baseball Recap: Apollo Drops Season-High Score on West Point

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Apollo). They put the hurt on the West Point Dragons with a sharp 13-1 victory on Friday. The Hawks have beaten the Dragons the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Dragons has come to flipping the script.

Rey Garcia was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching four innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. What's more, he posted five strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March. He was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one double.

In other batting news, Mateo Flores was incredible, scoring two runs while going 3-for-3. What's more, he posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in March. Isaiah Mendoza also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.

Apollo was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .609. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .318 or higher in four consecutive matches.

Apollo pushed their record up to 13-4 with the win, which was their third straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.3 runs over those games. As for West Point, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-9-1 record this season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Apollo will host Tolleson at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for West Point, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Dobson at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. The Dragons are facing the Mustangs at the right time seeing as the Mustangs are stuck on a six-game losing streak.
