The Sun Valley Spartans pushed their score all the way to 65 on Saturday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell 77-65 to Corvian Community. While losing is never fun, Sun Valley can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 384th, while Corvian Community is ranked 120th).
Sun Valley's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Devin Sumpter, who scored 15 points along with seven rebounds and two steals. Sumpter hasn't dropped below 15points for three straight games. Another player making a difference was Nathan Tavares, who scored 17 points along with five rebounds and three steals.
Corvian Community's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but AJ Jackson Jr. led the charge by scoring 15 points along with six assists. Doug Quarles III was another key contributor, scoring 15 points along with seven rebounds.
Sun Valley's loss dropped their record down to 5-10. As for Corvian Community, they pushed their record up to 9-2 with that victory, which was their 17th straight at home dating back to last season.
Sun Valley will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Butler at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Butler focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up nine on Saturday. Corvian Community will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Pine Lake Prep at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Pine Lake Prep has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 340 points over their last five matchups.
