The Morenci Wildcats came tearing into Monday's matchup with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 20.8 points) and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against Benson by a score of 54-42. Given Morenci's advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 62nd, while Benson is ranked 276th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Morenci got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Tristen Sanchez out in front who scored 18 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Aymen Abdulqader, who scored 13 points.
Morenci pushed their record up to 12-1 with that win, which was their third straight at home. As for Benson, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-8.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Morenci will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Round Valley at 7:00 p.m. on January 2, 2024. Benson's road trip will continue as they head out to face Apache Junction at 7:00 p.m. on December 20th. Apache Junction is coming into the matchup on a five-game losing streak.
