The Helix Highlanders will be taking part in a tournament against the Point Loma Pointers at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The last nine games Helix has played (dating back to last season) have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
Helix saw some tournament action on Monday. They fell just short of Scripps Ranch by a score of 3-1. The matchup marked the Highlanders' lowest-scoring game so far this season.
Helix saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Alex Carbajal, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3. That stolen base was Carbajal's first of the season.
Meanwhile, Point Loma made easy work of Bonita Vista on Monday and carried off a 9-1 win. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Pointers.
Phoenix Brant made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing six innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. Brant was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Branden Keeling, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI and one run. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Caden Williams, who went 1-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI.
Point Loma's victory bumped their record up to 3-1. As for Helix, they now have a losing record of 2-3.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Helix has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.4 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Point Loma struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Helix was able to grind out a solid win over Point Loma when the teams last played back in March of 2023, winning 4-1. Will Helix repeat their success, or does Point Loma have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
