Basketball Recap: Economedes Takes Loss Despite Strong Efforts from Yazmin Ayala and Gabby Maldonado

Economedes came up into this matchup off a tough 29-point defeat last Friday. This time they kept things ultra-competitive, but unfortunately the final result was the same. They fell just short of the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Bears by a score of 36-34 on Tuesday. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Jaguars this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 34-24 back in December of 2024.

Economedes' loss came despite strong showings from Gabby Maldonado and Yazmin Ayala. Maldonado went 6 for 15 on her way to 16 points and eight steals, while Ayala posted seven points and six steals. The dominant performance gave Ayala a new career-high in steals.

Economedes' loss was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 8-11. As for Pharr-San Juan-Alamo, their win ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 6-12.

Economedes and Pharr-San Juan-Alamo could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings. Economedes (ranked 1151st) will meet Edinburg (ranked 437th) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Pharr-San Juan-Alamo (ranked 1086th) will meet Weslaco (ranked 199th) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
