Basketball Recap: Matanzas Comes Up Short

After flying high against Palatka last Monday, Matanzas came back down to earth. The Matanzas Pirates fell 56-48 to the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs on Friday. The Pirates were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bulldogs apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January.

Despite the loss, Matanzas still got an impressive performance from Alexander Davis, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 14 rebounds. Davis' evening made it four games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Jezrahiah McCoy, who went 5 of 8 en route to 11 points.

Even though they lost, Matanzas was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Flagler Palm Coast only racked up six assists.

Flagler Palm Coast's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Anthony Hampton led the charge by putting up 19 points and six rebounds. Hampton is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 15 or more in the last six games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Corinthians Watson Jr, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 14 boards.

Matanzas has been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-6 record this season. As for Flagler Palm Coast, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 4-4.

Matanzas wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, an 81-52 win against Clay on the 16th. As for Flagler Palm Coast, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 77-74 victory against New Smyrna Beach on the 19th.
