Softball Recap: Las Cruces Takes Down Ranked Eldorado

On Friday, Las Cruces faced Eldorado in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The Las Cruces Bulldawgs blew past the Eldorado Golden Eagles 12-2. The Bulldawgs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five matchups by ten runs or more this season.

Leah Pacheco was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4. She also hit a triple, marking her first of the season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Zaysha Hawkins, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, four runs, and one triple. That triple marked the first that she hit this season. Erica Silva was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-4.

Las Cruces was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .440. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .400 or higher every time they've taken the field this season.

Las Cruces' victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-0. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Eldorado, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-3 record this season.

Coincidentally, Las Cruces and Eldorado will both be playing Cobre the next time they take the field. Eldorado will host Cobre at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, while Las Cruces will play them later in the day, at 6:00 p.m.
