Basketball Recap: Mcallen's Winning Streak Snapped at Three Games

After a string of three wins, McAllen's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They took a 55-51 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Vela Sabercats. While losing is never fun, the Bulldogs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 356th, while the Sabercats are ranked 156th).

When it comes to explaining why McAllen lost, don't look at D'Aundre Canada. Despite the final result, he went 8 for 13 on his way to 24 points and seven rebounds. The dominant performance gave Canada a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Dylan Gonzalez, who posted 12 points.

Leading Vela to victory were Jordan Bustamante and Jp Olivarez. Bustamante dropped a double-double on 19 points and ten rebounds, while Olivarez earned 14 points. That makes it three consecutive games in which Bustamante has scored at least a third of Vela's points. Another player making a difference was Aden Ybarra, who put up ten points.

McAllen's loss was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 15-7. As for Vela, they are on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten contests, which provided a nice bump to their 21-4 record this season.

McAllen didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 76-40 win against Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial on the 28th. As for Vela, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 64-43 victory against Sharyland on the 28th.
