Winfield is preparing for their first district matchup of the season on Thursday. They will look to take advantage of their home field for the first time this season as they take on the Mulvane Wildcats at 4:00 p.m. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
On Thursday, Winfield got the win against North by a conclusive 24-12. The win continues a trend for the Vikings in their matchups with the RedHawks: they've now won four in a row.
The team relied heavily on Brooklynn Mortimer, who went 5-for-6 with one home run, five stolen bases, and eight RBI. Emma DeLong was another key player, going a perfect 5-for-5 with three stolen bases, five runs, and one RBI.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Winfield kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 24 hits. They got seven more hits than North's also-impressive total of 17.
Six must be Mulvane's lucky number: they beat Wellington with that score not once but twice on Monday. The Wildcats won by a run and slipped past the Crusaders 6-5. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Wildcats.
Mulvane also got a great performance from Gracie Warner as she didn't allow a single earned run over 5.1 innings pitched.
At the plate, Mulvane let Olivia Ellis and Bailey Hall run wild. Ellis went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI, while Hall went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Another player making a difference was Jaryn Baker, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Mulvane's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-9. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.0 runs over those games. As for Winfield, they now have a winning record of 2-1.
Winfield might still be hurting after the 17-1 defeat they got from Mulvane when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can the Vikings avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
