The Marshall Rams's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Wednesday after their seventh straight loss. The match between them and Johnson wasn't particularly close, with Marshall falling 82-63. Marshall has not had much luck with Johnson recently, as the team's come up short the last three times they've met.
Despite the defeat, Marshall saw an underclassman step up: Josiah Powell scored 17 points along with five rebounds and three steals. It was the first time this season that Powell scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Aric Goodman, who scored ten points along with seven rebounds and five assists.
Even though they lost, Marshall were working as a unit and finished the game with 19 assists. This was only their 18th loss (out of 24 games) when they've passed the ball that well.
Johnson found their leader in underclassman Marc Anthony, who scored 30 points along with seven rebounds and two steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Ian Joshua, who scored nine points along with seven assists and four steals.
Marshall dropped their record down to 6-23 with that loss, which was their 11th straight at home dating back to last season. As for Johnson, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a massive bump to their 13-18 record this season.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Marshall will take on Churchill at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Hopefully Marshall focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 20 on Wednesday. As for Johnson, they will look to defend their home court on Saturday against Lee at 12:30 p.m. Johnson will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings (they are ranked 401st, while Lee is ranked 187th).
