Escondido hasn't had much luck against Westview recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Cougars will host the Wolverines at 4:00 p.m.
Wednesday just wasn't the day for Escondido's offense. They came up short against Ramona on Wednesday, falling 6-0. Having soared to a lofty 11 runs in the game before, the Cougars' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.
Kendall Workman was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: she tossed six innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off nine hits.
Meanwhile, Westview was able to grind out a solid victory over Fallbrook on Wednesday, taking the game 7-4. The win continues a trend for the Wolverines in their matchups with the Warriors: they've now won eight in a row.
Westview also got a great performance from Kaya Rodriguez as she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out eight over six innings pitched. Rodriguez has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in 11 consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Reese Marier was incredible, going a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Kiana Rodriguez was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Westview's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 14-8-1. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Escondido, their loss dropped their record down to 7-16.
Friday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Escondido hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .343. However, it's not like Westview struggles in that department as they've averaged .354. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Escondido might still be hurting after the 15-0 defeat they got from Westview when the teams last played two weeks ago. Can the Cougars avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
