Pharr-San Juan-Alamo and La Joya are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2020, but likely not for long. The Bears are taking a road trip to face off against the Coyotes at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Pharr-San Juan-Alamo is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.9 runs per game this season.
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo is headed into the match having just posted their closest victory since February 14th on Friday. They had just enough and edged out Edinburg North 5-3. The win continues a trend for the Bears in their matchups with the Cougars: they've now won seven in a row.
Arieanna Hernandez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned runs on six hits.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Arianna Lugo, who went 2-for-4 with one home run. Azul Rios also deserves some recognition as she launched her first home run of the season.
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .379. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .379 or higher in three consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for La Joya, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Tuesday. They came out on top against Economedes by a score of 10-7 on Friday. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Coyotes as it put an end to their four-game losing streak.
La Joya also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Alexia Guajardo gave up seven runs (all of which were unearned) on four hits and racked up eight Ks.
At the plate, Merelly Rodriguez was incredible, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run, five RBI, and one double. Those five RBI gave her a new career-high. Liani Rodriguez was another key player, scoring four runs and stealing three bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo pushed their record up to 20-2 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for La Joya, their record now sits at 4-13.
La Joya's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Pharr-San Juan-Alamo hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .518. It's a different story for La Joya, though, as they've only averaged .257. Will they be able to contain Pharr-San Juan-Alamo's hitters?
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo took their win against La Joya in their previous meeting back in March by a conclusive 18-1 score. Will the Bears repeat their success, or do the Coyotes have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
