The Mt. Vernon Yellowjackets will square off against the Dublin Scioto Irish at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Mt. Vernon comes in on 19 and Dublin Scioto on three.
Mt. Vernon is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Wednesday. They were the clear victors by a 12-1 margin over Watkins Memorial. The result was nothing new for the Yellowjackets, who have now won 17 matches by six runs or more so far this season.
Jocelyn Scarbury made a splash no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over five innings pitched. Scarbury was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, two RBI, and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Hailey Rudrick, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Brooke Dovenbarger, who went 1-for-3 with one home run.
Mt. Vernon was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .444. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Watkins Memorial only posted a batting average of .071.
Meanwhile, it was close, but on Wednesday Dublin Scioto sidestepped Teays Valley for a 4-2 win.
Like Mt. Vernon, Dublin Scioto also got a great game from a two-way player: Alexis Richie. On the mound, she struck out 15 batters over eight innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. Richie has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.
Richie wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Abbi Clark, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one double.
Dublin Scioto's victory bumped their record up to 18-8. As for Mt. Vernon, their win bumped their record up to 25-2.
Friday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Mt. Vernon has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .510. However, it's not like Dublin Scioto struggles in that department as they've averaged .446. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
