Even though the Fletcher Senators have not done well against the St. Johns Country Day Spartans recently (they were 0-3 in their previous three matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Monday. Fletcher took down St. Johns Country Day 50-32. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Fletcher.
Fletcher's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Mattie Gilliam led the charge by dropping a double-double on 16 points and ten rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Gilliam has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Katie Rodney, who scored seven points along with six assists and two steals.
When it comes to explaining why St. Johns Country Day lost, one person who can't be blamed is Mary Kate Kent. Despite the final result, she scored 20 points along with nine rebounds and two steals. Kent is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 20 games she's played.
Fletcher is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 10-7 record this season. As for St. Johns Country Day, their loss ended a six-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 16-5.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Fletcher won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Sandalwood at 7:00 p.m. on January 23rd. Sandalwood has now lost nine straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 12. As for St. Johns Country Day, they will head out on the road to face off against Global Outreach Charter Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Global Outreach Charter Academy will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Florida Rankings (they are ranked 583rd, while St. Johns Country Day is ranked 201st).
