4A Region 5 recap Oct. 31, 2012
Quitman extended the longest winning streak in 4A Region 5 this week by beating Newton County, 45-20. This was the team's seventh consecutive win.
Laurel and Northeast Jones played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Laurel eventually emerging with a 24-20 victory. Keon Howard threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns in the win.
The Golden Tornadoes' offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. On the ground Virzil Tillman chipped in 202 yards. Dauro Rogers helped Laurel's passing attack out by catching four balls for 70 yards.
Chris Horne was the best wideout in the league this week as Laurel bested the Tigers. Horne tallied eight receptions for 116 yards.
Todd Breland's team's Howard and Ocatvious Cooley have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 4A Region 5 in both passing and receiving yards. Howard has thrown for 1737 yards this season, while Cooley, a 6-foot-2 receiver, has 49 catches for 800 yards. Franklin Jones from Quitman leads the league in rushing with 1605 yards.
Steven Bynum's team took down the Cougars 45-20 last week, the largest margin of any game. Jones threw for 29 yards and ran for 155 yards in the win.
