The Assumption Royals are on the road again on Monday and plays the Aquinas Blugolds at 6:45 p.m. on February 12th. Both teams come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Last Thursday, Assumption earned a 52-44 win over Abbotsford. Given Assumption's advantage in MaxPreps' Wisconsin basketball rankings (they are ranked 42nd, while Abbotsford is ranked 263rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Meanwhile, Aquinas had already won seven in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 21.4 points), and they went ahead and made it eight on Friday. They breezed by Sparta on the road to the tune of 62-18. Aquinas has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won ten matches by 24 points or more this season.
Aquinas' success was spearheaded by the efforts of Samantha Davis, who scored 21 points along with five rebounds, and Madeline Murphy, who scored 22 points along with five rebounds and four steals. Davis has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last 20 times she's played. Another player making a difference was Ava Fernholz, who scored nine points along with four steals.
Assumption pushed their record up to 21-0 with that victory, which was their 11th straight on the road dating back to last season. As for Aquinas, their win bumped their record up to 19-3.
Assumption might still be hurting after the 69-49 defeat they got from Aquinas when the teams last played back in December of 2020. Can Assumption avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
