Lakin and Hugoton are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2021, but likely not for long. The Broncs will take on the Eagles at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Lakin is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.7 runs per game this season.
Lakin will bounce into Thursday's contest after beating Goodland, who they had gone 1-8 against in their nine prior meetings. The Broncs sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with an 8-7 victory over the Cowboys on Friday.
Kiah Beymer spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and three unearned) runs on nine hits.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Atlantis Hernandez, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Paiton Talmadge also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Lakin kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least ten hits in five consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, Hugoton was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their sixth straight defeat. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 2-1 heartbreaker at the hands of Stanton County.
Neftali Tinoco was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and one run. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played.
Lakin is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games. That's provided a massive bump to their 8-10 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.4 runs over those games. As for Hugoton, their loss dropped their record down to 2-8.
Hugoton's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Lakin has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.5 hits per game. It's a different story for Hugoton, though, as they've been averaging 10.6 hits. Given Lakin's sizable advantage in that area, the Eagles will need to find a way to close that gap.
Lakin got the 'W' in their previous meeting back in May of 2025 against Hugoton by a conclusive 12-2 score. Will the Broncs repeat their success, or do the Eagles have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
