The Lugoff-Elgin Demons's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their 15th straight loss. They fell just short of Irmo by a score of 66-64. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat Lugoff-Elgin has suffered yet this season.
Despite the loss, Lugoff-Elgin saw an underclassman step up: Jillian Rush dropped a double-double on 35 points and 14 rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Rush has scored all season. Kendra Wilson was another key contributor, scoring 17 points along with two steals.
Even though they lost, Lugoff-Elgin smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 32 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Irmo only pulled down ten offensive rebounds.
Irmo found their leader in underclassman Claire Howard, who dropped a double-double on 27 points and ten rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Andrea Collins, who scored 17 points along with six rebounds and four steals.
Lugoff-Elgin's loss was their sixth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 3-17. As for Irmo, their victory ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 8-8.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Lugoff-Elgin will square off against Ridge View at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Ridge View presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Lugoff-Elgin in South Carolina (Ridge View is ranked 25th, while Lugoff-Elgin is ranked 158th). Irmo's road trip will continue as they head out to face Richland Northeast at 6:00 p.m. on January 26th. Richland Northeast is coming into the game on a five-game losing streak.
