If the Battle Mountain Longhorns were feeling good off their 38-10 takedown of the Silver Stage Nighthawks on Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Battle Mountain opened the new year with a less-than-successful 33-22 loss to Sierra Lutheran. Battle Mountain was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Sierra Lutheran apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in December of 2019.
Battle Mountain's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Stevlana Martinez, who scored eight points along with seven rebounds and four steals. Martinez has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Noel Hill, who scored seven points along with five rebounds and four steals.
Sierra Lutheran's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Samantha Steyn led the charge by scoring nine points along with four steals. Steyn is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Rezsia Berger, who scored 11 points.
Battle Mountain's loss dropped their record down to 11-6. As for Sierra Lutheran, their win bumped their record up to 2-4.
Battle Mountain will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Oasis Academy at 4:30 p.m. on January 19th. As for Sierra Lutheran, Sierra Lutheran and Silver Stage will face off at 6:00 p.m. on January 10th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday.
