Waupaca had lost three straight at home, but on Friday they dropped down to 4-15 to make it four. They lost 19-9 to the Wrightstown Tigers. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Tigers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 14-2 back in April.
Lily Cichy and Autumn Schmidt stepped up to the plate in a big way. Cichy went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Schmidt went 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Hailey Bechard was another key player, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.
As for Wrightstown, they are on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last 12 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-7 record this season. The result was nothing new for Wrightstown, who have now won nine matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
On Wrightstown's side, Sophia Garcia was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out six batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and six unearned) runs off eight hits. That's the most strikeouts Garcia has posted since back in April. She was even better at the plate, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That home run was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Layla Beyer was a standout: she went 2-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and three runs. She is on a roll when it comes to home runs, as she's now launched at least one in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Bryn Amundson, who got on base in three of her five plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and three RBI.
Coming up, Waupaca will venture away from home to square off against Iola-Scandinavia at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Comets' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Thunderbirds have averaged an impressive 10.9 runs per game this season. As for Wrightstown, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Xavier at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
