Barron Collier and Gulf Coast are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2016, but likely not for long. The Barron Collier Cougars will look to defend their home field on Friday against the Gulf Coast Sharks at 7:00 p.m. The timing is sure in Barron Collier's favor as the squad sits on three straight wins at home while Gulf Coast has been banged up by three consecutive losses on the road.
Barron Collier had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 16-run drubbing they dealt Golden Gate on Thursday. Barron Collier never let Golden Gate get on the board and left with a 16-0 win. Considering the Cougars have won six matches by more than seven runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Dylan Wiggins looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Casey Johnson was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-2. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in doubles (two). Another player making a difference was Grady Gallen, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-2.
Barron Collier kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least ten hits in four consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Gulf Coast came into Wednesday's game having lost four straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They came out on top against Riverview Sarasota by a score of 6-2 on Wednesday.
Nash Tuner looked comfortable as he tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.
At the plate, Gulf Coast let Brandon Borrego and Jackson Geiger run wild. Borrego went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and two RBI, while Geiger scored a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. The team also got some help courtesy of Jonathan Kacinas, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-2.
Barron Collier has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-3 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. Gulf Coast now has a winning record of 8-7.
Gulf Coast's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Barron Collier hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .335. It's a different story for Gulf Coast, though, as they've only averaged .251. Will they be able to contain Barron Collier's hitters?
Barron Collier came out on top in a nail-biter against Gulf Coast when the teams last played two weeks ago, sneaking past 2-1. Does Barron Collier have another victory up their sleeve, or will Gulf Coast turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
