Zach Silva and Jarrick Sharp provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Carlsbad. The connection was good for 70 yards, the longest such play in 5A District 2 this season.
Manzano took down Cibola 47-7 last week, the largest margin of any game.
La Cueva's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Silva threw for 220 and two touchdowns and Sharp had 108 yards receiving. On the ground Michael Rose chipped in 66 yards. Chris Thompson helped La Cueva's passing attack out by catching five balls for 64 yards.
5-foot-9 quarterback Angel Gonzales of the Monarchs is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1181. He has also thrown 10 touchdowns. On the ground, the Bears' Rose has rushed for 697 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Thompson. The La Cueva star has 34 catches for 567 yards.
The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between La Cueva and Eldorado. Ed Lucero's team enters the game ranked seventh in the state, while the Eagles ranks 20th.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Sandia takes on Manzano. The Matadors have allowed 98 points this season, while Chad Adcox's team has given up 132. Sandia allowed 38 points last week as it fell to Clovis.
The Monarchs led 5A District 2 in scoring this week after putting up 47 points on the Cougars.
