The Flint Hill Huskies were the 80-72 winner over the Mount Vernon Mustangs when they last played one another back in December of 2022, but their luck changed this time around. Flint Hill fell 60-49 to Mount Vernon on Saturday. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Flint Hill came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked fourth in Virginia, while Mount Vernon is ranked 51st in Georgia).
Mount Vernon was led to victory by Xavier Shegog and Kj Garris. Shegog dropped a double-double on 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Garris scored 29 points along with six rebounds. Shegog is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 15 or more in the last four games he's played. Sha'yah Goba was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with five rebounds.
Flint Hill's defeat dropped their record down to 9-5. As for Mount Vernon, their win was their 12th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 12-7.
Flint Hill will head out on the road to challenge Sandy Creek at 1:30 p.m. on Monday. One thing working in Sandy Creek's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last four matchups. As for Mount Vernon, they will face off against Greenforest at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Greenforest will be looking to extend their current seven-game winning streak.
