The Morgantown Mohigans are taking a road trip to face off against the University Hawks at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Morgantown is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of West Virginia's top teams: Parkersburg South, who was ranked 22nd at the time (Morgantown was ranked sixth). The Mohigans fell just short of the Patriots by a score of 5-4 on Tuesday. Mohigans fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Patriots since on Tuesday.
Vincent Aloi was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, he pitched seven innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits. What's more, he gave up only zero walks, the fewest he's had since back in May of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one RBI.
In other batting news, Weston Mazey was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 3-for-4. He also put up a double, which was his first of the season.
Meanwhile, University came into Monday's matchup having lost three straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They walked away with a 5-2 victory over John Marshall on Monday.
University also got a great performance from Jacob Kennison as he didn't allow a single earned run over 6.2 innings pitched. Kennison has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Brance McCune and Baret Shuba did most of the damage at the plate: McCune scored two runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances, while Shuba scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Max Cash, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.
This is the second loss in a row for Morgantown and nudges their season record down to 7-5. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 8 runs in those games. As for University, their record is now 5-7.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Morgantown has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like University struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 2.9 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Morgantown came out on top in a nail-biter against University when the teams last played on Thursday, sneaking past 4-2. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mohigans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
