2A Region 1 recap October 29, 2013
Baldwyn's Duke Upshaw rumbled for the longest rushing play in 2A Region 1 this season in his game against Walnut last week. Upshaw scampered for 70 yards on the play and finished with 146 on the day as his team topped the Wildcats.
Baldwyn extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Walnut, 41-12. The win marks fifth in a row for the Michael Gray's team.
Corbin Scott threw for 196 yards and 4 touchdowns. He was 8-16 with 0 interceptions.
Armontie Price made the biggest impact on defense this week as the Bearcats defeated John Meeks' team. The 5-foot-11 freshman pulled down 1 interception and grabbed 0 sack.
Scott and Upshaw gave Baldwyn a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. Laquintez Upshaw also contributed to the rushing game with 52 yards on the ground.
Mantachie's Dustin Carrell and Nick Burns led the league in both passing and receiving yards. Carrell has thrown for 1,483 yards this season, while Burns has 33 catches for 611 yards. J.T. Herring from New Site leads the league in rushing with 1,244 yards.
The top two teams in 2A Region 1 will face off this week when first place Walnut takes on second place Mantachie. The Wildcats fell to the Bearcats last week, while the Mustangs defeated East Union.
The Urchins' Blake Spruill is a mere 100 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season. Spruill has rushed for 900 yards on 102 carries so far this year.
Walnut fell to Baldwyn 41-12 last week, the largest margin of any game.
