5A West recap September 24, 2013
Morrilton was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after beating Searcy. The Devil Dogs came in at 18 in the state poll after placing at number 26 last week.
Shiloh Christian lost to Greenwood 55-24 last week, the largest margin of any game. Daniel Shimer was a bright spot for the Saints, as he threw for 256 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for 61 yards in the loss.
Greenbrier's dynamic duo of Will Drewry and Karson Matthews proved tough for Benton to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Drewry threw for 378 yards and 4 touchdowns and Matthews had 188 yards receiving. Gerrell Williamson helped Greenbrier's passing attack out by catching 8 balls for 85 yards.
The Panthers' dynamic duo of Drewry and Matthews proved to be unstoppable against the Panthers, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week.
Matthews was the best receiver in 5A West this week as Greenbrier lost to Benton.
Drewry put up the best numbers in passing as Randy Tribble's team lost to the Panthers.
Cyrus McKaskle was a key player and the best on defense this week as Morrilton bested the Lions. The 5-foot-8 junior.
Sharaz Rhodes was the best running back in the league this week. In 11 carries, he ran for 105 yards as Cody McNabb's team lost to Benton. Teammate Toney Hawkins added to the ground attack by rushing for 57 yards.
He was 35-48 with 0 interception.
5-foot-10 quarterback Drewry of Greenbrier is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1,008. He has also thrown 12 touchdowns. The leading receiver in the league this season is Rayshod Criswell. The Morrilton star has 27 catches for 318 yards.
Fans will be treated to a premier battle in the secondary when the Devil Dogs' Criswell goes up against Shiloh Christian's Jarred Moore.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Josh Floyd's team takes on Morrilton. The Saints are in third place, while the Devil Dogs are in first place.
Morrilton made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 2,106 from 2,730. They were able to move up in the ranks after a 38-7 victory over Searcy last week.
