After five lead changes,
Germantown (Madison, Miss.) took the lead for good when it scored a touchdown with 3:00 remaining in the fourth quarter and held on to defeat
Mendenhall (Miss.) 42-41 on Saturday.
The Mavericks led 21-20 at halftime, but the Tigers recaptured the lead on a touchdown run with under a minute left in the third.
By the end of the third, Germantown found itself trailing by 7 points as Mendenhall captured the lead thanks to three scores in the quarter. MHS scored on a touchdown run, a rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion in the quarter.
The Tigers missed two extra point attempts in the loss.
GHS's most effective player was
Tyler Shell. The junior quarterback threw one touchdown and ran for one touchdown. He has now scored four touchdowns on the season.
The victory is a complete turnaround from last season's game between these two teams, which Mendenhall took, 40-10.
The defeat comes as a step back for Mendenhall, which notched a 36-7 victory over Port Gibson in its previous outing. With the win the Madison school extended its winning streak to three games. The loss snapped MHS's 3-game winning streak.
Germantown (3-3) will play a 4A Region 6 game against Raymond next week, while Mendenhall (3-4) will take on Raymond also in a 4A Region 6 game.
