Jefferson has enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they'll head out on the road. The Jefferson Yellowjackets and the Buena Vista Bison will face off at 7:00 p.m. on January 25th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. One thing working in Jefferson's favor is that they have posted big point totals every time they've taken the court this season.
Even though Jefferson has not done well against Sergeant Bluff-Luton recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. Jefferson came out on top against Sergeant Bluff-Luton by a score of 71-62. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Jayden Calabro continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 27 points along with five rebounds and two steals. He hasn't dropped below 15points for three straight games. Another player making a difference was Jordan Dewaele, who scored 14 points along with eight rebounds.
Meanwhile, this season hasn't been kind to Buena Vista, who are still winless after their 13th game. They took a serious blow against Creighton Prep on Saturday, falling 66-26. While losing is never fun, Buena Vista can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 267th, while Creighton Prep is ranked 16th).
Carter Canion put forth a good effort for the losing side as he scored six points.
Buena Vista struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only four offensive rebounds. They are winless (0-4) when they can't control their own glass like that.
Jefferson's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-2. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 82.5 points per game. As for Buena Vista, their loss dropped their record down to 0-13.
Keep an eye on the arc in Thursday's match: Jefferson have made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having averaged 8 threes per game. It's a different story for Buena Vista, though, as they've been averaging only 2.8 threes per game. Given Jefferson's sizeable advantage in that area, Buena Vista will need to find a way to close that gap.
Everything came up roses for Jefferson against Buena Vista in their previous meeting back in January of 2023 as the team secured a 76-24 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Jefferson since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
