Firth and Declo are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2019, but likely not for long. The Cougars will welcome the Hornets at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The timing is sure in Firth's favor as the team sits on eight straight wins at home (dating back to last season) while Declo has been banged up by nine consecutive losses on the road also dating back to last season.
Firth came into their game on Wednesday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They came up short against Malad, falling 17-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Cougars have suffered since May 17, 2024.
Firth saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Quinton Hall, who scored a run while going 2-for-2.
Meanwhile, it was close, but on Wednesday Declo sidestepped Soda Springs for an 8-7 victory. The Hornets haven't had any issues with the Cardinals recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.
Kyle Bott made a splash no matter where he played. He struck out seven batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off six hits. Bott was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 2-for-4. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in March of 2024.
In other batting news, Declo let Riley Matthews and Zane Snedaker run wild. Matthews scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-2, while Snedaker scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4. Those two hits gave Matthews a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Dodge Edgar, who scored a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
Declo always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .529. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive matches.
Declo's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-8. As for Firth, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-4.
Declo's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Firth has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .441. It's a different story for Declo, though, as they've only averaged .353. Will they be able to contain Firth's hitters?
Firth skirted past Declo 6-5 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Do the Cougars have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Hornets turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
