Baseball Recap: Muskogee Triumphs

It may have taken nine innings to finish the job, but Muskogee ultimately got the result they hoped for on Thursday. They walked away with a 9-6 win over the Checotah Wildcats. The victory continues a trend for the Roughers in their matchups with the Wildcats: they've now won four in a row.

Owen Gilliam made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Muskogee is 2-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 9-18 otherwise. Gilliam was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Kylin Blue and Truth Dedmon did most of the damage at the plate: Blue got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs, while Dedmon went 3-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Dedmon has become a key player for Muskogee: the team is undefeated when he posts at least three hits, but 8-19 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Doc Estes, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one run.

Muskogee hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their strikeout total in three consecutive contests.

Muskogee's record now sits at 11-19. As for Checotah, their defeat ended a seven-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 12-17.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Muskogee will venture away from home to take on Collinsville at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The Cardinals will roll in looking for their fifth straight win, something the Roughers surely won't give up without a fight. As for Checotah, they are taking a road trip to square off against Poteau at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
