Baseball Recap: Gilbert Classical Academy Comes Up Short

Gilbert Classical Academy came into this matchup off a tough 11-run loss last Monday. This time they kept things ultra-competitive, but unfortunately the final result was the same. They fell just short of the Pima Roughriders by a score of 9-7 on Wednesday. The Spartans' defeat continues a trend for the squad, making it three in a row.

Ryan Roco was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He struck out nine batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and eight unearned) runs off eight hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.

Roco wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Max Fioresi, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-4. Ivan Vigil was another, scoring a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Gilbert Classical Academy's loss dropped their record down to 4-8-1. As for Pima, their record is now 5-7-1.

Coming up, Gilbert Classical Academy will square off against Sequoia Pathway Academy at 3:45 p.m. on Friday. As for Pima, they will take on Miami at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Vandals have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 11.73 runs per game on average), something the Roughriders will no doubt try to take advantage of.
