2A Tri-Peaks recap Sept. 26, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Trinidad, who took down 67th ranked Trinidad, 34-0. Elias Altamirano threw for 218 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 41 yards in the win.
Logan Elliott and Kyle Gaines provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Manitou Springs. The connection was good for 80 yards, the longest such play in 2A Tri-Peaks this season.
Joseph Jarmillo was the best wideout in the league this week as La Junta beat the Miners. Jarmillo tallied four receptions for 196 yards. Joel Johnson helped La Junta's passing attack out by catching two balls for 22 yards.
Johnnie Krien was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 138 yards on 13 carries as Florence topped Trinidad. Scott Sandavol also contributed to the rushing game with 108 yards on the ground.
Eddie Aragon made the biggest impact on defense this week as La Junta defeated Randy Begano's team. The junior racked up one sack.
Elliott provided a threat through the air and on the ground as St. Mary's lost to the Mustangs. He completed 13 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 42 yards. Elliott's favorite target this week was Gaines, who caught two passes for 123 yards.
Alamosa's Zach Meyer and Jacob Heaton have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 2A Tri-Peaks in both passing and receiving yards. Meyer has thrown for 744 yards this season, while Heaton, a 5-foot-8 receiver, has 28 catches for 295 yards. The Miners' Chris DeAngelis leads the league in rushing yards with 713.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Trinidad takes on Lamar. At the moment, the Miners are in second, while the Savages are in third.
Lamar was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from sixth to third in the league. Jason Tice's team defeated Dolores Huerta Prep 33-0 earlier in the week.
