It may have taken nine innings to finish the job, but Skyline ultimately got the result they hoped for on Monday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-3 win over the Meridian Mustangs. Winning may never get old, but the Hawks sure are getting used to it with their fifth in a row.
Izaiah Matthews and Cameron Kerns made a big impact no matter where they played. Throwing, Matthews didn't allow a single earned run over 4.2 innings pitched. Meanwhile, Kerns struck out six batters over 4.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. Matthews has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. At the plate, Matthews went 1-for-4 with one home run and two runs, while Kerns went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases and one run.
In other batting news, Mark Jeffries was excellent, going 2-for-5 with two stolen bases and one run. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in April.
Skyline's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-7. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of one runs across that stretch.
