The Armijo Royals are taking a road trip to take on the Johnson Warriors at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The teams are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Armijo has struggled recently with 11 losses in a row, while Johnson will arrive with five straight wins.
Armijo fell victim to Fairfield and their airtight pitching crew on Friday. They came up short against the Falcons, falling 31-0.
Meanwhile, while Johnson put up plenty of runs on Friday, the same can't be said for Burbank. The Warriors were the clear victors by a 19-0 margin over the Titans. Considering the Warriors have won eight games by more than nine runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Angelene Gonzales and Anissa Zavala were major factors while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Gonzales struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Meanwhile, Zavala tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances. At bat, Gonzales got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI, while Zavala got on base in all four of her plate appearances with four stolen bases, four runs, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Lily Munoz was incredible, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with one home run, seven stolen bases, and five runs. Those seven stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Leticia Gonzales was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one double.
Johnson always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .763. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive contests.
Johnson's record now sits at 11-9. As for Armijo, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-10.
Armijo suffered a grim 32-0 defeat to Johnson in their previous meeting on April 8th. Can the Royals avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
