Softball Recap: Independence Wins Going Away Against Bakersfield

Independence came out on top against Bakersfield on Friday thanks in part to the team's impressive six-run second inning. The Falcons put the hurt on the Drillers with a sharp 12-2 win. The Falcons might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine matches by six runs or more this season.

Destiny Serna was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out 14 batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 16 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in February.

In other batting news, Daisy Martinez was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April. Maylea Lutu was another key player, going 1-for-4 with three RBI and one run.

Independence hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their strikeout total in three consecutive games.

Independence now has a winning record of 11-10. As for Bakersfield, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost eight of their last ten contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-15 record this season.

As of now, neither Independence nor Bakersfield have any future games scheduled.
