Charlotte Catholic has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will challenge The Myers Park Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Charlotte Catholic can now show off six landslide victories after their most recent contest two weeks ago. They took their contest at home with ease, bagging a 42-0 victory over East Mecklenburg. Given Charlotte Catholic's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina football rankings (they are ranked 40th, while East Mecklenburg is ranked 313th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Among those leading the charge was Charlie Smith, who threw for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Walt Valentine made the highlight reel by snagging an interception and taking it all the way to the house.
Meanwhile, Myers Park entered their tilt with South Mecklenburg with six consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with seven. Myers Park won a game that couldn't have been any closer, slipping by South Mecklenburg 32-31.
Among those leading the charge was Rj Alexander, who rushed for 168 yards and a touchdown while picking up 10.5 yards per carry, and also caught a touchdown. Wendell Thompson was another key contributor, throwing for 150 yards and three touchdowns.
Charlotte Catholic is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 7-3 record this season. As for Myers Park, their win was their third straight on the road, which bumped their overall record up to 7-3.
Friday's match might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Charlotte Catholic has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 163 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Myers Park struggles in that department as they've been averaging 161.7 per game. It's looking like Friday's match might have some serious battles in the trenches.
