Hurricane and Herbert Hoover are an even 3-3 against one another since April of 2016, but likely not for long. The Redskins will challenge the Huskies at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Hurricane's pitching crew has only allowed 2.9 runs per game this season, so Herbert Hoover's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Hurricane is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of West Virginia's top teams: Point Pleasant, who was ranked seventh at the time (Hurricane was ranked ninth). The Redskins fell just short of the Big Blacks by a score of 3-2 on Tuesday. Having soared to a lofty ten runs in the game before, the Redskins couldn't push the score so high this time.
Kate Justice was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: she tossed five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits.
At the plate, Hurricane saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Josie Shamblin, who got on base in all three of her plate appearances with one run.
Meanwhile, Herbert Hoover had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 10.5 runs) and they went ahead and made it three two weeks ago. They were the clear victors by a 9-3 margin over the Tigers. Considering the Huskies have won 15 games by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Jocelyn Schafer looked comfortable as she tossed four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits.
On the hitting side, Bella Haas and Campbell Lunsford did most of the damage at the plate: Haas went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Lunsford went 1-for-2 with one home run and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Ayva Veltri, who went 1-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Herbert Hoover kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive contests.
Herbert Hoover's record is now 24-7. As for Hurricane, their loss ended an eight-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 17-11.
Hurricane couldn't quite get it done against Herbert Hoover when the teams last played back in March as they fell 10-7. Can the Redskins avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
