Taylor Winfield and Kamryn Smith were huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. Throwing, Winfield struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Smith struck out seven batters over 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off one hit (and not a single walk). With that strong performance, Winfield is now averaging an impressive 5.2 strikeouts per game. At bat, Winfield got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI, while Smith went 3-for-4 with two triples, three runs, and one RBI. That RBI was Smith's first of the season.
In other batting news, Zaria Williams was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with one home run. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season.
As for Godby, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 2-3. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 17.0 runs over those games.
Like Leon, Godby also got a great game from a two-way player: Aryah Jones. On the mound, she struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up six earned (and one unearned) runs off 11 hits. Jones was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs.
In other batting news, Layla Brown was excellent, going 1-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was De'Onni Roberts, who went 1-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Coming up, Leon is taking a road trip to take on Aucilla Christian at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The Lions' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Warriors have averaged an impressive 12.9 runs per game this season. As for Godby, they will challenge Jefferson County at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
