Wayne Academy has gone a perfect 3-0 against Mize recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Saturday. The Wayne Academy Jaguars will face off against the Mize Bulldogs at 2:00 p.m. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Wayne Academy proved they can win big on Saturday (they won by seven) and on Friday they proved they can win the close ones too. They had just enough and edged out Stringer 7-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Jaguars have posted since April 30, 2024.
Colton Stringer made a splash no matter where he played. He tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Stringer was also big at the plate, scoring a run while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.
In other pitching news, Wayne Academy got a great performance from Cohen Walley as he struck out six batters over 4.2 innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off only two hits.
Back at the plate, Wayne Academy let Cale Graham and Patten Shirley run wild. Graham went 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI, while Shirley went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. The dominant performance gave Graham a new career-high in RBI. Tyler Wooten was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and one RBI.
Wayne Academy lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Mize came tearing into Friday's contest with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.5 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They put the hurt on the Tigers with a sharp 8-2 victory. The Bulldogs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four games by six runs or more this season.
Trey Myers was excellent, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Walker Sullivan, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3.
Mize's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-2. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Wayne Academy, their victory ended a five-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 4-4.
Wayne Academy came out on top in a nail-biter against Mize when the teams last played back in February of 2019, sneaking past 1-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for Wayne Academy since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
