Boulder Creek is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Arizona's top teams: Mountain Ridge, who was ranked 15th at the time (Boulder Creek was ranked 18th). The Jaguars came out on top in a nail-biter against the Mountain Lions on Thursday, sneaking past 3-2.
Avery Gurr tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits over five innings pitched. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Boulder Creek's win was truly a team effort as three different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Mikayla McCoy, who went 1-for-3 with one run. McKayla Chapman was another, earning one run and two stolen bases.
Meanwhile, Liberty was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their ninth straight defeat. They took a 7-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of Perry.
Haley Horst was huge no matter where she played even without the win. On the mound, she pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Horst was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. That home run was her first of the season.
Liberty's loss dropped their record down to 6-14-1. As for Boulder Creek, their victory bumped their record up to 19-6.
Boulder Creek's speedy runners might be the difference in Tuesday's game. The Jaguars have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.7 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Liberty, though, as they've been averaging only 0.8 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Boulder Creek continue to outrun the ball?
Boulder Creek skirted past Liberty 3-2 in their previous matchup on April 3rd. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Jaguars since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
