Washington's high school football season started off with a titan falling.
The Bellevue Wolverines - ranked No. 23 in the nation by Rivals.com - lost their season opener to Skyline 6-0.
The loss snapped a 14-game win streak for second-ranked Bellevue, which has won five of the last six Class 3A state titles. The loss also snapped a nine-game win streak in the KingCo Conference.
No. 7 Skyline became the first team to shut out Bellevue since Sept. 26, 1997, according to the Seattle Times.
"It was wild, it was unbelievable, this was the place to be," Skyline sophomore quarterback Jake Heaps told the Times. "It was so surreal."
Skyline, which won the Class 4A state title in 2005 and then dropped down to Class 3A last year, didn't have the win sewn up until the final play.
A fumble gave the Wolverines a final chance, but Skyline's Eric Beige dropped Bellevue quarterback Tommy Castle on the 5-yard line on the final play.
Skyline's score came with 5:57 remaining in the first half when Heaps hit receiver Gino Simone for a 60-yard touchdown pass.
Bellevue entered the season with only three starters off last year's state title team.
"We didn't know what we were going to get," Bellevue coach Butch Goncharoff told the Times.
Football: New QB Leads Lakes to Kickoff Classic Victory
Calvin Schmidtke showed he was the final piece needed for Lakes of Lakewood, ranked No. 1 in the 3A classification.
Schmidtke, despite playing under a heavy pass rush from Gig Harbor's Pac-10-sized linemen, led the Lancers to a 28-7 win at the Emerald City Kickoff Classic at Qwest Field on Saturday.
Schmidtke played for Class 2B Life Christian the last two years before transferring to a powerful Lakes team. He passed for 272 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for a fourth, against the 10th-ranked Tides.
"(He ) played a real football game tonight," Lakes coach Dave Miller told the Seattle Times.
Other Kickoff Classic Games: Erich Armstrong passed for 257 yards and five touchdowns as Franklin Pierce crushed Selah 54-6. ... Royal capitalized on six turnovers to beat Eatonville 34-23. ... Newport of Bellevue beat Liberty of Issaquah 28-0 in a Kingco 3A early season showdown. ... No. 5 Kentridge edged Inglemoor 14-6. ... Cody Bruns, who broke several receiving records last year, saw some time at quarterback as Prosser beat Southridge 33-7. Bruns ran the ball four times for 18 yards, caught three passes for 33 yards, and was 8-of-13 for 119 yards, two TDs and an interception.
Football: Lynnwood Ends Two Streaks
The Lynnwood Royals snapped a 20-game losing streak with a 28-7 win over Mountlake Terrace. It was the first conference win (excluding a forfeit) the Royals have earned since 1998, first-year coach Dorian Manza told the Seattle Times.
Scott Hill caught a pair of touchdown passes from Andrew Beatty to lead Lynnwood.
Other notable Week 1 happenings: Washington Huskies recruit Demetrius Bronson had 163 yards on 10 carries at Kentwood beat South Kitsap 21-19. Bronson had a 68-yard TD run with 3:06 remaining. SK running back Stephan Tucker rushed for 197 yards on 33 carries. ... Lamardray Fuller rushed for 307 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries at Beamer beat Jefferson 49-14. ... David Williams rushed for 225 yards and three scores on 17 carries as Puyallup beat Sumner 30-7. ...
Volleyball: Eisenhower Wins Emerald City Invite
Eisenhower, a traditional Class 4A volleyball power from Yakima, won the second Emerald City Invitational volleyball tournament Saturday at Eastlake.
Eisenhower earned a spot in the final with best record from pool play. Lakes, tied with Newport for the second-best record, earned a spot in the final with a coin flip. Eisenhower won 25-14, 25-23, 25-18.
Tori Fisher led Eisenhower with 18 kills in the title match.
