The Cambridge Academy Cougars were the 36-29 winner over the Curtis Baptist Crusaders when they last played one another back in February of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. Cambridge Academy took a 52-39 hit to the loss column at the hands of Curtis Baptist on Tuesday. Cambridge Academy found out winning isn't easy when you don't work as a unit and rack up eight fewer assists than your opponent.
When it comes to explaining why Cambridge Academy lost, one person who can't be blamed is Jillian Mapes. Despite the final result, she scored 14 points along with seven steals and six rebounds. Another player making a difference was Alex Cockrell, who scored 12 points along with two steals.
Curtis Baptist found their leader in underclassman Maci Butler, who dropped a double-double on 20 points and 16 rebounds. Butler hasn't dropped below two steals for eight straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Mia Price, who scored ten points along with two steals.
Cambridge Academy's defeat dropped their record down to 10-4. As for Curtis Baptist, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 11-5.
Cambridge Academy will be playing at home against Easley HomeSchool at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Curtis Baptist, they will head out on the road to face off against Jefferson Davis Academy at 6:15 p.m. on Monday. Jefferson Davis Academy will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in their respective state's rankings (they are ranked 268th in South Carolina, while Curtis Baptist is ranked 114th in Georgia).
