The Floyd County Buffaloes will square off against the Fort Chiswell Pioneers at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Floyd County is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.2 runs per game this season.
Floyd County fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Patrick County on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Cougars by a score of 7-6.
Emma Biesterveld spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and five unearned) runs on five hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Lilly Gillispie made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and fired off two home runs while going 2-for-4. Addison Allen was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one home run.
Meanwhile, Fort Chiswell entered their tilt with Galax on Tuesday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They came out on top against the Maroon Tide by a score of 5-1.
Blair Jackson was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 13 over seven innings pitched. Jackson was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one run and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Lilly Goforth, who went 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That triple was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Jenna Ball, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Fort Chiswell's victory bumped their record up to 11-5. As for Floyd County, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 10-4 record this season.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Thursday. Floyd County hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.7 home runs per game. However, it's not like Fort Chiswell struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.4 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down. Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more softball content.
