Mechanicsville is 9-1 against Varina since May of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Mustangs will welcome the Blue Devils at 6:00 p.m.
On Friday, Mechanicsville came up short against Patrick Henry and fell 10-5. The loss continues a trend for the Mustangs in their meetings with the Patriots: they've now lost five in a row.
Ella Hagen was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Avery Howell, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs.
The home team had won the previous seven meetings between Varina and Armstrong, and Varina kept the tradition alive. The Blue Devils were the clear victors by a 19-5 margin over the Wildcats on Thursday. That looming 19-5 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Blue Devils yet this season.
Rylee Geer made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out 12 batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off two hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with five stolen bases, four runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Elaina Montalvo and Julia Anderson did most of the damage at the plate: Montalvo went 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one triple, while Anderson went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI Montalvo has posted since back in March of 2024. Mary Beth Hallett was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Varina always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .548. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Mechanicsville's defeat dropped their record down to 2-5. As for Varina, they now have a winning record of 4-3.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. Mechanicsville has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.9 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Varina struggles in that department as they've been averaging 9.9 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went Mechanicsville's way against Varina in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as Mechanicsville made off with a 10-0 win. Do the Mustangs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Blue Devils turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
