2A District 1 recap Oct. 23, 2012
Ramah extended the longest winning streak in 2A District 1 this week by beating Navajo Pine, 46-6. The win marks sixth in a row for the the Mustangs.
Laguna Acoma took down Crownpoint 53-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
Ramah's dynamic duo of Tyrell Morgan and Daniel Barton proved tough for the Warriors to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Morgan threw for 210 yards and three touchdowns and Barton had 121 yards receiving. Todd Estate helped Ramah's passing attack out by catching six balls for 51 yards.
Gaylan Cheeku was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 22 carries, he ran for 185 yards as Zuni topped Navajo Pine. Teammate Taylor Peywa added to the ground attack by rushing for 102 yards.
Ramah's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Mustangs feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Morgan has thrown for 1467 yards and 20 touchdowns this season, while Matthew Barton has 44 catches for 477 yards. Tyrell Daniels leads the league in rushing with 745 yards.
The top two teams in 2A District 1 will face off this week when first place Ramah takes on second place Tohatchi. Last week, the Mustangs beat Leo Hand's team, while Tohatchi lost to the Thunderbirds.
There should be lots of points scored when the Cougars and Ramah face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Tohatchi comes in having scored 220 this season, while the Mustangs have scored 312. Mark Chandler's team scored 12 points last week as it lost to Zuni.
Ramah made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 13,998 from 14,195. They were able to move up in the ranks after a 46-6 victory over the Warriors last week.
