Baseball Recap: Lansing Christian Gets the Win

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Lansing Christian ultimately got the result they hoped for on Monday. They had just enough and edged out the Saranac Redhawks 9-8. While the Pilgrims didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-13), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Trevor Orton and Collin Leavitt made a big impact no matter where they played. Throwing, Orton pitched 2.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Meanwhile, Leavitt struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off nine hits. Orton has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances. At the plate, Orton got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Leavitt went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Those hits were Leavitt's first of the season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Will Marl, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Lansing Christian's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 1-2 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Caleb Franck, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

Lansing Christian kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive contests.

Lansing Christian's win bumped their record up to 5-2. As for Saranac, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-4.

Looking ahead, Lansing Christian will be playing at home against Dansville at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Saranac, they will square off against Perry at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
