Two dominant backs in Markellis "kj" Asbury and Kevon Rivera are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Philip Simmons Iron Horses will be playing in front of their home fans against the Hanahan Hawks at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Philip Simmons' favor is that they have now posted big point totals every time they've taken the field this season.
Last Thursday, Philip Simmons got themselves on the board against North Charleston, but North Charleston never followed suit. They blew past the Cougars 43-0 on the road. The result was nothing new for Philip Simmons, who have now won seven matches by 24 points or more so far this season.
Philip Simmons' win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Sharod Williams, who rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown on only ten carries. Kolten Kellermann was another key contributor, picking up 48 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Hanahan fell on hard times earlier this season, but after back-to-back wins it seems like their luck might finally be changing. They breezed by Battery Creek on the road to the tune of 49-13. With Hanahan ahead 28-7 at the half, the contest was all but over already.
Rivera had an outrageously good game as he rushed for 242 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 12.7 yards per carry. Rivera was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 56 yards. Another player making a difference was Landon Gomes, who picked up 102 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Philip Simmons' win was their sixth straight on the road (dating back to last season), which bumped their overall record up to 8-0. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 0-8 Georgetown and 3-5 St. James (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 39.4% over those games). Hanahan is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a massive bump to their 4-4 record this season.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Philip Simmons has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 345 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Hanahan struggles in that department as they've been averaging 194.9 per game. It's looking like Friday's contest might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Everything went Philip Simmons' way against Hanahan when the teams last played back in October of 2022 as Philip Simmons made off with a 22-0 victory. Will Philip Simmons repeat their success, or does Hanahan have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
