The Waverly Wolverines will be playing at home against the Chenango Forks Blue Devils at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday. Waverly knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past 11 games -- so hopefully the Blue Devils like a good challenge.
Even though Norwich scored an imposing 55 points on Monday, Waverly still came out on top. Waverly secured a 59-55 W over the Purple Tornado. Given Waverly's advantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 84th, while the Purple Tornado are ranked 312th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Meanwhile, Chenango Forks pushed their score all the way to 60 on Wednesday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell 71-60 to Susquehanna Valley.
Despite their defeat, Chenango Forks saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Stephen Samsel, who scored 23 points along with five rebounds, was perhaps the best of all. Walker Paske was another key contributor, scoring 16 points along with six rebounds.
Waverly has been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 10-3 record this season. As for Chenango Forks, their loss dropped their record down to 7-9.
Waverly beat the Blue Devils 67-54 in their previous meeting back in January. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Samsel, who dropped a double-double on 20 points and 13 rebounds. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will Waverly still be able to contain Samsel? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
